Reflective Writes

11/1/07
Today we went on the class wiki site and did an assignment on addiction. The wiki site stopped working halfway through class so I couldn't finish the work.

10/30/07
Today we did presentations on different things about tabacco. Smoking is a very costly habit and quitting can save you a whole bunch of money. Smoking also decreases you chance of getting a job because it costs more for an employer to insure a smoker. Secondhand smoke is very dangerous and can cause many serious health problems for people who are around smokers. There are many different methods to help quit smoking. Atropine and Scoppoline therapy uses drugs to reduce nicotine withdrawal symtoms. Hypnosis can be used to convince people not to smoke. Acupunture is also used to help people quit. Laser therapy is also used but there is no scientific evidence that shows that it helps quit smoking.

10/26/07
We watched a video called the power of choice. It was about the choices that a teen can make. Decisions that teens make can affect the rest of their life. The video gave several definitions to words related to teens making choices. Growing up is learning to control yourself. Initiative is to act positively. Perspective is to not get caught up in the moment, and see the big picture. A good vision of yourself will make you make good choices.

Today we listened to some presentations on the health risks of tobacco. Smokeless tobacco like chew is still really bad for you. It is as addictive as heroine and cocaine. The same methods that are used to quit smoking can be used to quit chewing tobacco. Nicotine withdrawal is when a tobacco user tries to quit and they get symptoms that are caused by the lack of nicotine in their body. Symptoms can last from a few days to several weeks. There are many health benefits that go along with quitting smoking. Some of these things will happen right away and some will take months. Breathing will become easier for a smoker after they quit. Their blood pressure will also go down.

10/16/07
Today we learned about testicular and cervical cancer, a write-up on the information that we covered can be found in my homework section.

10/12/07
Today we went on a chat room about drugs where you could put in questions about drugs and a group of scientists would answer them. There were thousands of people doing this so our questions were not answered right when we put them it, but we should be able to get our answers next week.

10/10/07
Today Josh made a juice using the class juicer. The juice that he made was called the Brain Stimulator. According to the site where he got the recipe you only use 10% of your brain and if you eat coffee and doughnuts then that can go down to 2%. The ingredients of the Brian Stimulator juice supposedly make it so that you use 10% of your brain again.

10/8/07
Today we were going to see a presentation on juicing, but Jen didn't have her stuff ready. So we went to the computer lab and worked on our tobacco project. My topic is the physical addiction of tobacco.

10/4/07
Today we listened to another one of Ricky's sex ed presentations. He talked about contraceptives. There are hormonal and non-hormonal contraceptives. The only way to ensure not getting someone pregnant is to not have sex.

10/2/07
Today we listened to Ricky's presentation on STI's(sexually transmitted infections). The seven most common STI's for high school kids are pubic lice, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, herpes, and genital warts. The least harmful of these infections is crabs.

9/28/07
Today we listened to more vitamin presentations. We were going to see a juicing presentation, but we didn't because Joe was absent. Madison did a presentation on vitamin B-6 which can be used to benefit contraceptive users.

9/26/07
Today we learned how to use the juicer by watching Mr. Cohun make apple juice. We will all have to make a different kind of juice as a project. The we listened to some peoples presentations about vitamins. These are some facts from the presentations, pellagra is a vitamin deficiency disease that is caused by a lack of vitamin B3. Vitamin B3 can also help with heart problems and diabetes.

9/24/07
Today we went to the computer lab to catch up on any work that we haven't done and to organize our blogs. I didn't really have anything that I needed to do so I started to work on finding my juicing recipe.

9/20/07
Today we listened to a presentation by Mr. Carter who is a former coach at UVM. The main point of his presentation was organ donors, but he talked about a lot of things. I learned that the liver is the biggest organ inside the body and that you can't live without it, but a piece can be cut off and used for a transplant. The main thing that I got out of the presentation was that I be a organ donor if I die.

9/17/07
Today we people presented there projects about vitamins and vegetables. Here are some general facts about the vitamins that we learned about. Vitamin C helps strengthen blood vessels. Cologen is what holds tissue together in animals. Vitamin C is not as effective if your taking aspirin. Chickory is good for the immune system. Vitamin B-1 causes your body to burn fat.

9/13/07
Today we got divided into groups for the food pyramid project that we are going to do. This will be the first big group project that we have done. We also made a Flickr account for Sarah because it wouldn't work for her.

9/11/07
Today we checked out some of the blogs that people had done. Mr. Cohun reminded us that we should keep up with our work because it is very hard to catch up when you fall behind. We also listened to some peoples presentations on vitamins.

9/7/06
Today in class we discussed more about juicing. We watched a two online videos about two different brands of juicers. The first one of the Briville Juice fountain elite juice. This juicer had many advantages, it is easy to clean, it is powerful, it is made of durable stainless steel, it is efficient, and has a titanium cutting blade. The next juicer that we looked at was the Jack Lalanne power juicer. Some advantages of this juicer is that it is quiet, and can juice whole fruits. The first juicer that we looked at seemed like a much better choice if you are looking to buy a juicer.

What is juicing and why would you want to have juicing be part of a healthy lifestyle?

Juicing is the process of taking the juice from a fruit or vegetable and then drinking it. When juicing is done juicing machine is usually used and several different types of fruit are juiced. There are many benefits to juicing. Fruits and vegetables are important for a healthy diet and juicing provides an easy way to consume those foods. Another advantage of juicing is that it gives you all the nutrients from a fruit or vegetable, but it is much easier to digest. By mixing up different kinds of juices it is also much easier to consume many more types of vegetables then you would normally eat. This variety of vegetables allows you to take in lots of different nutrients instead of a limited variety from one of two vegetables that you might eat normally.

9/5/07
Today in Health2 we discussed the five components of health. They are Physical, Social, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual. We took a walk outside of the school and the teacher pointed out various things and we then made a connection between those things and one of the components of health. We walked up to the sports fields and after discussing different aspects of sports we realized that sports relate to every component of health. Sports relate to physical health because of the exercise that you get when playing them. They relate to social health because of how an athlete interacts with his teammates and the fans watching the game. Mental health is a big part of sports because you need to know where you should be on the field and what you are suppose to do there. Sports can be emotional when you win or lose. Sports also include spiritual health because if you like the sport that you are playing then participating in it makes you feel really good. This activity showed that almost everything relates to at least one of the components of health.

I just set up a blog for Health 2 class. I did this by setting up an account with blogger.com, I had to enter my email, make a user name, and password. I also had to set up some new posts, this is one of them. The only thing that I really had trouble with was setting up the link to out Wiki class page, but I got it figured out. This is the first blog that I have ever set up.
